Writing down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg (1986)

front cover of writing down the bones

This book was recommended to me by a lovely teacher that I trained with, my only regret is that it sat on my shelf for about 15 years before I got around to reading it. This is a liberating read – and if you want to write but are beset by doubt, anxiety, or any other obstacle, this is an essential handbook. Goldberg’s grounding in zen meditation makes this different from other ‘how to write’ books – this is not about rules or ‘do nots’ –  it’s about writing as practice. Judith Guest sums it up in her foreward, this book ‘could save a lot of grief. It could even save your life.’
