Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman (1995)

This popular book of the 1990s made the case for emotional intelligence as a greater indicator of success than IQ. Recognising and identifying emotions is the first step in being able to choose how to respond and manage them, and Goleman includes devastating examples of what happens when emotional intelligence is absent. Emotional intelligence can be developed and strengthened, and can help us to flourish at work and in all our relationships. The 10th anniversary edition (on Audible) ends with a conversation between Goleman and Jon Kabat-Zinn and the intersections between their work. For Goleman, self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence while Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as the cultivation of ‘moment to moment non-judgemental awareness’ – a telling illustration of mindfulness as the underpinning element of almost all self-development.
